Saffron – A precious spice with unique properties

Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world and is cultivated in various regions globally. Due to its hand-harvesting and processing, pre-treatment with heat or irradiation is often necessary to reduce microorganisms, including pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli. However, these treatments may reduce microbial contamination, but at the same time reduce the bioactive components and thus the quality of the product.

In contrast, Spanish saffron is characterized by its gentle cultivation and harvesting methods. Since there are no problems with microorganisms, radiation treatment is not necessary. This preserves the valuable bioactive ingredients in the saffron and extraction takes place in larger quantities.

Affron® – The innovative saffron extract of the new generation

affron® is extracted from Spanish saffron stigmas using a state-of-the-art process, which significantly improves the profile of the bioactive components. After processing, the extract has a standardized content of at least 3.5% of the bioactive compound Lepticrosalides®, supplemented by high levels of the two main components safranal (0.03 - 1%) and crocin (3.48 - 8.0%). These concentrations significantly differentiate affron® and its effects from other saffron extracts on the market.

Standardization is done by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which ensures precise identification and quantification of each bioactive substance. Affron® is also genetically 100% DNA certified as Crocus sativus L.
